Hot Stones have been used for thousands of years with references going back as 400BC, where stones were used to massage the body with olive oil. In India the ancient art of Ayurveda used hot stones, which dates back 5000 years. There is also reference of Native Americans and Hawaiian and Indigenous populaces using some sort of hot stone therapy. A therapist named Mary nelson in the early 1990’s created a technique using 54 stones which incorporated the chakras and force centres. She named this technique LaStone Therapy which is said to be responsible for the rise in hot stones popularity.

What are Hot Stones?
Hot stones are the use of heated volcanic rock called basalt that is incorporated into a massage. The stones are rich in minerals and are known to retain heat well. The stones are placed in a special stone heater submerged in water to a suitable temperature. Massage oil is applied before the hot stones are used to massage the client. The stones can be placed at certain points on the body such as; on the back, in-between toes or palms of hand. The heat from the stones warms and relaxes; this allows the therapist to apply a deeper pressure, improves the circulation and clams the nervous system. This treatment is beneficial for several conditions such as;
- stress and anxiety
- muscular and joint aches and pain
