What is the history of Acupuncture?

Traditional Acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles. It has been used safely and successfully in treating disease for over 3000 years. Archaeological evidence suggests Acupuncture has been used for 5000 years.

Acupuncture involves is the insertion of fine sterile disposable needles (to FDA regulations) into specific points of the body, known as acupoints. They help maintain health and correct the flow of Qi (energy) to ease pain and promote relaxation and healing.

From a western scientific perspective, it is thought that by inserting acupuncture needles through the layers of skin, the nervous system can be affected through this network, causing a variety of responses from neurochemical such as endorphins and enkephalins to  release to anti-inflammatory and tissue repairing processes. Recent extensive studies in the UK show there to be no serious side effects.

There are hundreds of used acupuncture points on the body and each point has its own specific combination of energetic actions and healing benefits.

The most commonly used points are located on the arms, hands, legs and feet, and the specific combination of acupoints selected during treatment is individually tailored during each and every session to give optimum benefit as it improves over a course of treatments.

What Happens?

The treatment will last 45 – 60 mins. This includes a full consultation and any of the additional treatments listed.

Your first treatment will consist of an in depth consultation based on your medical history, current medications and main problem that you are coming to the clinic with. In Chinese medicine, the practitioner needs to get a complete holistic picture of what is happening in the body and, therefore, you will be asked a full range of questions on your current health, from lifestyle, to sleep patterns.

Once a diagnosis has been made, extremely fine, single use sterile needles are inserted at certain ‘acupoints’ along the body. The needles are then left in place for about 15-30 minutes. After treatment the needles are removed and immediately disposed of; all needles used in treatment are pre-sterilised, single-use, disposable needles. Once the needles have been removed, people often feel energised or relaxed.
